When did you start learning dance?

"Learning to dance since I was five years old"

Why are you interested in dance?

"I first learned to dance while watching my sister. She is five years younger than me, so when I saw her dancing, I wanted to dance too. I didn't have any special motivation, so I just followed my sister."

What difficulties did you encounter while learning to dance?

"When I was a kid, I would definitely feel pain when I stretched my muscles. I practiced very hard for dance competitions. There used to be national individual dance competitions every year when I was a kid. Then as I grew up, I felt that the difficulty in learning to dance was not the physical pain or frustration. On the contrary, when you go abroad, there will be some cultural differences. For example, when rehearsing or giving things, you will obviously feel that there will be more integration between Asians and foreigners in their ideas or work. It’s just more difficult.”

What is the dance process? Why would you want to continue your studies abroad?

"I started learning to dance when I was five years old. I went to high school in Taipei and studied in the National Taipei University of the Arts' youth consistent system. So it is a seven-year academic system from high school to university. And in the process, there are people like me. I chatted with my mentor, and then I went to New York as an exchange student during my sophomore year. Maybe it was at that time, because of my experience as an exchange student, I went abroad to get to know some foreign dancers and saw the way they dance, and I discovered that foreigners are enthusiastic about learning dance from the inside out. I really like dancing, so I come to take classes, but I think children in Asia, that is, Taiwan, are more passive, so I am attracted by them. Infected by his enthusiasm, I said, “Well, I want to go abroad to continue dancing, and then learn with such people.”

Why do you go to Shanghai to work?

This is also an opportunity. When I was abroad, I would work with some choreographers or get to know different actors and dancers, so I was working... It should be said that I took on many different jobs. and production, I got to know these people, and then a director I met among them took me to Shanghai. "

What made you want to be a dance teacher?

"I actually like to share this. I was originally a full-time professional dancer, and then I danced in Europe and also went to the Middle East. Due to the pandemic, theaters were closed, so I came back to Taiwan temporarily. In fact, I was studying dance. During the process, I would have the opportunity to teach or do a workshop to share lessons, but I did not become a full-time dance teacher until the epidemic, and I returned to my hometown of Yunlin. Then with this opportunity, I opened my first class. In the process of sharing this class with students, I slowly found a very different feeling from being a dancer on the stage. On the stage, it seems that I am just myself and my body, and then I am with one thing on the stage. , but in the classroom, it seems that I am with many people, and then I feel that this energy and this feeling are very good, so I gradually like teaching more and more, and I like sharing with everyone more and more."

Has your dream since childhood been to be a dance teacher?

"I don't think so. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a professional dancer, but there are usually age limits for professional dancers. This is quite realistic. For example, ballet dancers may have to join a dance company at the age of 14. , and by the time I reach 20, it may be quite an extreme age, but I am a modern dancer, and I am okay. I just graduated from college, went to graduate school, and then joined a dance troupe, and it has always been with me. I have this goal and dream of becoming a dancer, but I feel that in the process, I can become a dancer while learning, and I can also try other things, so I don’t seem to have said since I was a child that I must be a dance teacher, just like I have always been on the path of dance, but I have not limited myself to saying that I want to be a dancer or a teacher, or become a production director or choreographer."

Have you ever regretted doing this career?

"It doesn't seem to be happening at the moment, but it seems pretty certain. From the first dance competition in my second or third grade of primary school, I liked the feeling of being on the stage. I also knew clearly at that time that I wanted to pursue dance all the time. Go down the road."

What advice or advice would you give to students who are passionate about dance and want to become professional dancers?

"Speaking from my own experience, I would like to advise you to take the opportunity and not be afraid to try anything. Like before, I would probably oh I am a dancer, I would just do the job of a dancer, but after graduation, I will find that many jobs are complementary to each other. For example, when I was in college, we would learn about production and administration. How to do a dance production in this kind of organization is to learn from it and enter the workplace. Many of them are related, so I changed from a dancer to a choreographer and participated in the production. That means I became a dancer who was not on the stage, and I became a behind-the-scenes complete production with the director. The director is responsible for directing the play, and I am responsible for choreographing the dance, so I feel that I just seize every opportunity and try different positions, but what I am doing may be the same thing, that is, I am in the direction and field of dance. Here, you never know where the future will take you. If there is an opportunity now, even if I think it is challenging, I will still take it, and in the process of working, I will be able to learn from my predecessors. Or you can learn from the teachers. Then after you have this experience, maybe next time he will take you to a farther place."

Key Takeaway from the Interview

“You never know where the future will take you. If there is an opportunity now, even if you think it is challenging, you still have to take the next step. Then in the process of working, you can learn from your seniors or teachers. , then after you have this experience, maybe he will take you to a farther place next time!”
